On friday (6th August 2021) Bishop Joseph Mwongela of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui held a dinner at the Kitui Pastoral Center aimed at supporting street children and those with special needs at St.John Eudes Rehabilitation Center. Bishop Mwongela thanked all the stakeholders who have been at the forefront united to see all the church projects successfully done. The dinner raised more than 3.5 million shillings which will be used to facilitate the rehabilitation of more children and improve the social amenities of the center.
Guided by his all-time pillars of self-reliance and vacation, he posed a challenge to the parishes in the Diocese to engage in an income-generating project which contributes to development and sustainability. He encouraged all the families to be united and always be there to guide some of the children who might be addicted to drugs and substance abuse and provide a shoulder to lean on their way to recovery.
The Rehabilitation Center’s goals are to reunite the street children with their families and rehabilitate them back to their homes and schools by providing medical care, as well as giving access to and money for elementary and secondary education if appropriate. It also voluntary counseling, and also promotes self-reliance where it gives the children an opportunity to learn skills in tertiary institutions and also vocational training. According to the Catholic, Diocese reports indicate that the center has assisted over 700 street and vulnerable children since its establishment in 2001.
The rehabilitation center has played a very big role in assisting the street children in the streets of Kitui town and the environs and empowering them.
